Tanyka M. Barber is an Associate with TNG and has over 10 years of experience in civil rights/equal employment opportunity law. Tanyka’s core areas of competency include employment discrimination/Title VII, diversity and inclusion, investigations, training, and compliance.
Prior to joining TNG, Tanyka served as the Director of Diversity and EEO at Morgan State University, a historically Black college and university, in Baltimore, Maryland, where she directed and provided guidance relative to the University’s anti-discrimination and diversity initiatives for approximately 7,800 students and 1,200 employees. Previously, Tanyka spent four years in a similar position as the EEO Officer at Baltimore County Public Schools where she managed the EEO functions for a K-12 school system of approximately 17,000 employees. In these positions, Tanyka gained expertise in conducting investigations, drafting investigation reports and position statements in response to employment discrimination complaints filed internally and with external state and federal agencies, and working with managers to implement corrective actions. In addition, Tanyka was responsible for evaluating employee requests for reasonable accommodations, drafting workplace policies and procedures, developing complaint processes, preparing various compliance reports, and developing and conducting trainings.
Tanyka also served as Assistant General Counsel at the Maryland Commission on Civil Rights which is the agency charged with enforcing the state’s civil rights statutes relative to employment, housing, and public accommodation discrimination. While at the Commission, Tanyka litigated cases against organizations found to have engaged in discrimination, provided statewide trainings, and drafted various legal documents, legislation and regulations.
Tanyka has extensive experience representing employers at mediations and fact-finding conferences and in conducting trainings on topics related to non-discrimination and sexual misconduct. She regularly provides trainings to various audiences to include business owners, managers and employees.
Prior to attending law school, Tanyka worked in the public health field for seven years and held positions in government, non-profit, and academic institutions where she developed skills in research, policy development, community education and outreach, and project management.
A Maryland native, Tanyka earned her B.S. in Health Education from Morgan State University; her M.H.S. in Health Policy from Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health; and her J.D. from the University of Baltimore School of Law. Tanyka is a member of the Maryland State Bar.
